S4S (Surfaced Four Sides) boards come to you already dressed and ready for the workbench. Each board has been professionally planed on both faces and ripped on both edges, providing a consistent 3/4" finished thickness, eliminating the need for heavy-duty planing or jointing, and practically ready for use right out of the box.


While these boards are smooth to the touch, they typically only require a light final sanding (120–220 grit) to remove any minor handling marks before you apply your choice of stain or finish.

Is this a true 3/4" thickness?

Yes, we list our dimensions in "actual" measurements, and not in "nominal" dimensions like most lumber providers. A 3/4" x 6", for example, will be a true 3/4" x 6" board.

What is S4S?

S4S stands for surfaced on four sides; This is in reference to our milling/surfacing process that yields a smooth, ready-to-use board right from the box. S4S boards are planed on both flat faces and ripped on straight edges.

Are these boards suitable for outdoor use?

This is entirely dependent on the species you choose; We would recommend using White Oak for any projects strictly for outdoor use.
