A prime member of the walnut family, butternut lumber is coarse and straight-grained. Butternut wood is a very stable species of wood and has only a very small tendency to warp or crack while in use. Butternut lumber is commonly used for church altars and by wood carvers. It is especially adept for duck decoys. Butternut is also used for furniture, millwork, and paneling.
